Root Canal

Root canal treatments work to remove the infected pulp within a tooth, which is then filled and sealed to protect it from further decay.

We have found that root canals have a better success rate when done with a specialist (Endodontist). Endodontists do require a referral from your dentist. We will refer you and then work closely with the Endodontist. We will crown the tooth at our office once the root canal is done.

Overview

When detected early enough, tooth decay is addressed with a standard filling or something similar to remove the decay and close off the area. However, when the decay has moved beyond the outer tooth and affected the inner portion of the tooth, you may need a root canal. Also called endodontic treatment, root canal therapy at Brian Wong D.D.S. P.A. (formerly Stonebriar Dental) requires the removal of the decayed pulp from the tooth, disinfects the cavity, and then fills and seals the tooth. Board-certified dentist Dr. Brian Wong may recommend root canal therapy to their Frisco, TX patients because it treats the infection and keeps the decay from extending to other teeth which creates additional issues.

If you think you could benefit from root canal therapy, we understand that you may have reservations about undergoing the procedure. Though root canals are common dental treatments, patients often shy away from going to the dentist to address tooth pain because of anxiety and fear. Dr. Wong and his staff try very hard to keep you at ease and comfortable and our office offers sedation dentistry for relief of dental fear and anxiety. Call Brian Wong D.D.S. P.A. to arrange a consult with our experienced team for more information on sedation options and root canal therapy.

Infection that reaches the pulp of your tooth might be the result of a severe crack or deep cavity in the tooth, or a physical injury. Common signs that you might have a tooth infection are tooth pain, jaw pain, swollen and discolored gums, and discoloration of the affected tooth. If the infected pulp is not treated, the pain and swelling will increase as the infection spreads to the rest of the mouth. Set up an appointment at Brian Wong D.D.S. P.A. at your earliest opportunity if you suspect changes in your mouth. If you have fears and reservations about going to the dentist, don’t hesitate to ask us about sedation dentistry to help you remain calm and at ease during your dental treatments.

What To Expect

Prior to beginning the treatment, your anesthetic and sedation options will be discussed with you. We do not want you to feel nervous, anxious, or scared during your appointment. Several individuals opt for nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral-conscious sedation to undergo a root canal. Our dentists understand and empathize with those who have dental phobias and attempts to help you make the recommended decision for your sedation needs.

To perform an endodontic procedure, the innermost part of your tooth will be observed and the infected pulp will be carefully extracted. Next, the inner chamber will be meticulously cleaned to evacuate any leftover debris. To conclude the procedure, the tooth is filled with a dental filler to seal and protect it from further decay.

Recovery

Subject to what type of sedation was chosen, you might need to have a reliable adult escort you home following your appointment. You should expect your mouth to feel tender or swollen; however, these symptoms are minor and can be tolerated with anti-inflammatory medications. We ask that you arrange for a routine checkup about six months post-procedure. We will examine the area to determine if the infection has been controlled and that there is no cause for concern. Henceforth, you should continue to schedule standard dental checkups and twice yearly dental cleanings to optimize your oral health.

Insurance Coverage

During you consult, we will discuss cost estimates to align your treatments with your health needs and your budget. If you currently have dental insurance, we will speak with your provider to obtain your benefits. If you do not have dental insurance, Brian Wong D.D.S. P.A. takes a number of payment methods and can assist you in finding medical financing options.
