Dental Crowns

Dental crowns help to save and restore teeth that are worn down or damaged by using a choice of materials to stabilize or enhance the tooth.

Overview

When a tooth is worn down or damaged, it may be saved with a crown. Sometimes called a cap, dental crowns are made custom to cover the needed tooth and colored to blend with your natural teeth for an attractive finish. At Brian Wong D.D.S. P.A. (formerly Stonebriar Dental) in Frisco, TX, a crown can treat tooth decay, strengthen a damaged tooth, hold together a crack, or mask discoloration. Board-certified dentist Dr. Brian Wong creates custom crowns with a choice of materials, including metal and porcelain, to meet your goals. Make an appointment at our Frisco office to find out how a custom dental crown may repair or strengthen a damaged tooth while also enhancing the total appearance and health of your mouth.

Best Candidates

A crown may be wanted or needed for several different reasons. They may be placed to cover a decaying tooth to prevent it from chipping or it may hold hold together an already cracked tooth. Dental crowns may also cover a worn down or loose tooth. They can be a cover and strengthen a tooth with a lot of decay that will not be able to hold a tooth-colored filling, as part of a dental bridge, or to hide discolored or misshapen teeth. Crowns may be glued over your tooth or connected by an implant. The crown’s material is chosen with consideration before it is being placed. Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) or metal are usually stronger, which makes them better suited for the less visible molars and pre-molars. Ceramic or porcelain crowns are often selected for the visible teeth and custom made to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth. In your consult, one of our dentists will explain your choices and help you choose the best dental crown for your budget and needs.

What To Expect

At your consult, your dentist will get dental impressions so your crown can be made to fit your tooth. In some cases, a temporary dental crown may be used to cover your tooth as your permanent crown is being crafted. As soon as your custom crown is made, the treatment area will be given a local numbing anesthetic. Stronger sedation techniques may be used to soothe any fears or anxieties. When the anesthesia has taken effect, your dentist will prep your tooth by cleaning away any decay, before lightly filing the enamel to create space for your dental crown so it fits snugly. Your dental crown can be either glued to your tooth or connected to an implant. Once set, your dentist can adjust the crown’s fit so it is comfortable.

Recovery

Unless sedation was used, you will be able to leave our office once the procedure is done and continue your daily activities. Dr. Wong our a member of his team will teach you how to care for your dental crown, including any foods that should be avoided and cleaning. At your yearly examinations at Brian Wong D.D.S. P.A., Dr. Wong will evaluate your dental crown and adjust it to keep it comfortable. They will tell you when your crown should be replaced; however, with good care, it may last for several years. If you notice any trouble with your crown (if it falls out or is loose), call our office immediately. Don’t try to repair it or re-attach it because this may cause an infection or bad fit.

Insurance Coverage

Based on your insurance coverage, a portion of your costs may be paid. After contacting your insurance carrier, we can calculate your remaining costs. At your consult, we will help you select the best crown material that suits your needs and budget. We can also talk about payment methods along with financing to help make your procedure affordable.
